It is an ancient maritime town with more than 2,000 years of history. On the waterfront near the entrance to the harbor is a small fort called Fortaleza (or Forte) Nossa Senhora da Penha de Franca , which is more commonly known as the Fortaleza (Forte) da Ponta da Bandeira (Fort of the Flag Point). It was constructed from 1680 to 1690, when Portugal was under Spanish rule, to protect the coats against the British fleet.
