Dalida - 2017 at the cinema
Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti, Dalida's real name, was born in Cairo in 1933 as the daughter of Italian parents. In her early twenties she moved to Paris and started her career - soon she became a star. She is one of France's greatest chansonists and was gifted with an amazing voice, elegance, pathos and stage presence. She recorded over 2000 songs and sold 150 million records worldwide and therefor she received several gold and platinum records. Despite these grandiose successes, her private life was overshadowed by deep crises and misfortunes.
Dalida was too modern for her time to follow all the rigid social norms and conventions, but not always modern and strong enough to break them.
On 3 May 1987 she committed suicide in Paris, leaving behind a note explaining that life is unbearable.
