Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013)
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013),
South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and philanthropist, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
As one of the leading figures in the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela sought to form an organised resistance against the institutional and structural racism which inundated post-colonial South Africa. Opposing apartheid and instigating mass strikes, Mandela came to light as a figure of hope for the oppressed - which ultimately led to his 27 year imprisonment in 1962.
Having received more than 250 honours throughout his life, including the Nobel Peace Prize, the world has already begun to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday in July of 2018, had he not passed away in late 2013. Here at akg, we've put together a selection of some of our most iconic images of Mandela throughout his life, in order to showcase the breadth of his legacy.
