1897 Vienna Secession
3 April 2022 - 125th anniversary

The foundation of the Vienna Secession on 3 April 1897 marked the birth of modern Austrian art.

Under the leadership of Gustav Klimt, nineteen artists left the traditional Künstlerhaus because they no longer accepted the dominant historicist taste and political will.

They founded the "Vereinigung bildender Künstler Österreichs, Secession". With the magazine 'Ver Sacrum' they had a long-range public voice for modern art and the Secessions building, opened in Vienna in 1898, offered young artists the opportunity to present their works to a large audience.
