Guillaume Apollinaire
Guillaume Apollinaire was born Polish subject of the Russian Empire in Rome on August 26, 1880 under the name of Guglielmo Alberto Wladimiro Alessandro Apollinare of Kostrowitzky. He was a poet, playwright, short story writer, novelist, and art critic.

Having spent his adolescence in the south of France and settled in Paris in 1900, he was naturalised in France only in 1916. He was wounded in the temple by shrapnel a week later on the battlefield and died in Paris on November 9, 1918 of the Spanish flu, two days before the Armistice of the Great War.

Apollinaire is considered one of the foremost poets of the early 20th century, as well as one of the most impassioned defenders of Cubism and a forefather of Surrealism.
