World War I Armistice
On 11 November 1918 at 5am, an armistice was signed between Germany and the victorious Allied forces. Six hours later, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, fighting ceased. Although the state of war did not formally end until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in June 1919, most commemorations of the end of the war are focussed around the date of the armistice. We look at images marking the armistice itself, Versailles, the return home of soldiers and the promise of peace.
