Chaïm Soutine
Chaïm Soutine was born in Smilavichy, Belarus in 1893. Aged twenty he emigrated to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts, later taking French citizenship. His work is highly individual, with vibrant and often violent brushwork that prefigured Abstract Expressionism. Illness brought Soutine's career and life to an abrupt end; he died of a perforated ulcer on 9 August 1943.
Other artists who died in 1943 and whose work is now out of artistic copyright include Maurice Denis, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Camille Claudel.
