Maurice Denis
Maurice Denis (1870-1943) was an artist, art historian and theoretician closely associated with Les Nabis and the Symbolist movement. Denis' work is often dismissed as merely decorative but his religious faith lends his paintings a dignity and emotional depth. He was also a technically assured painter, having trained both at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian in Paris.

Other artists who died in 1943 and whose work is now out of artistic copyright include Camille Claudel, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Chaïm Soutine.
