Birth and death of archduke Franz Ferdinand
Next year, we will mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in June 1914 was a catalyst for Austria-Hungary declaring war against Serbia which in turn led to the Triple Entente of the United Kingdom, France and the Russian Empire entering the war against the Central Powers of Austria-Hungary and its ally, Germany. In December 2013 we also mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Franz Ferdinand (on 18 December 1863), so we have chosen a small selection of images illustrating the archduke's life and death from our vast archive.
