1953 - Uprising in East Berlin
June sees the sixtieth anniversary of what Germans refer to as the Aufstand des 17. Juni, the uprising in East Germany that began as a strike by construction workers but quickly spread to other cities in the German Democratic Republic as a protest against the government. Communist authorities responded agressively: the protests were suppressed and many Germans were executed for political crimes or simply shot dead in the street. We mark this anniversary with a small selection of images from the archive illustrating the defiant mood of those protesting on the streets of Berlin and the brutality of the Soviet response.
