Auschwitz Today
The town of Oswiecim in southern Poland is better known around the world by its German name: Auschwitz. The network of concentration camps built by the Nazis near to the town has become a powerful symbol of the Holocaust. Two years after the end of the war, the sites of Auschwitz and Birkenau became a permanent museum and in 1979 the concentration camp was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A number of akg-images' photographers have visited the memorial site; even today, seventy years after its liberation, the camp is a stark and brutal reminder of the inhumanity of Nazi Germany.
