800 years since the signing of Magna Carta
Nearly 800 years ago, on 15 June 1215, the Magna Carta was issued by King John. Since then the document, the name of which translates from the Latin as "Great Charter" has become one of the most important documents in the history of the British Isles, even though many of the laws laid down in the Magna Carta are no longer used. The charter guaranteed the King's subjects certain rights, including swift access to justice, and also ensured that the King himself was bound to follow certain laws, protecting the King's subjects from royal tyranny.
