Art before Russian October Revolution
For a long time Russian painting was completely dominated by icon painting; then, however, a rapid exchange set in parallel a development with Western European art.
Numerous movements and artists' associations formed, such as the "Peredwischniki" (Traveling Painter), which artistically translated the social and political reality of Russia at the time. In addition to Russian realism and symbolism there was also the impressionism of the Moscow school.
