Treasures of the Vatican
In October 2018 the Vatican installed a new lighting system for the Pietà, Michelangelo's masterpiece in St Peter's Church in Rome.
The sculpture is now illuminated by warm white LED lights, which allow the viewer to appreciate the full beauty of this work of art.
The sculpture, which the young Michelangelo created between 1497 and 1499, is an outstanding example of the art of the High Renaissance.
The Pietà is situated inside the first chapel to the right of the entrance of St Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo was only 23 years old when he was commissioned to create the sculpture for the tomb of the French cardinal Jean de Bilhères-Lagraulas.
It is the only sculpture Michelangelo ever signed.
