Pope Benedict XVI.
Pope Benedict XVI was born on 16.04.1927 as Joseph Ratzinger in Markl (Upper Bavaria). The son of a gendarme and a cook spends his schooldays at the archiepiscopal seminary St. Michael in Traunstein.
In the context of the National Socialist youth service compulsory it 1942 compulsorily member of the Hitler Youth and 1943 air force helper in Munich.
After World War II he studied Catholic Theology and Philospphy in Freising and Munich. In 1953 he and his older brother Georg were ordained priests by Cardinal Faulhaber. In 1959 he is appointed to the Chair of Fundamental Theology by the University of Bonn. Appointments to the universities of Münster (1962), Tübingen (1967) and finally Regensburg (1969) follow. 1977 Appointment and consecration to the archbishop of Munich and Freising. In 1982, Pope John Paul II appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, one of the most important and influential ministries of the Catholic Church.
On April 19, 2005, the College of Cardinals elects him new Pope in the fourth ballot. He is the first German Pope since Hadrian VI, who was elected Pope in 1526. On February 11, 2013, he announces his resignation due to age. Thus, for the first time since 1294, when Pope Coelstin V resigned, a pope of his own accord back. Today, the emeritus Pope lives in the Vatican and rarely appears in public.
