Afghanistan – A country in the focus of world politics
For decades, Afghanistan has been the focal point of world politics. Shortly after its founding in 1747, the Central Asian Kingdom became a plaything of Russian and British colonial interests, after 1945 part of the East-West conflict. After the overthrow of the communist government in 1992, rival militias control the country, followed by the Islamist Taliban. After September 11th, 2001, the invasion of US troops and the formation of a provisional government under Hamid Karzai follow. The focus of our country report is not the historical development of Afghanistan, but the everyday life of the population, against the backdrop of decades of political and military confrontation.
