August 2016: 80 years since the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin
August 2016 marks 80 years since the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin:
Nazi Germany used the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin for propaganda purposes; Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels exploited the Olympic festivities to advance the Nazi cause by portraying Germany as a strong and united nation under Hitler. The success of African-American athletes such as Jesse Owens, however, undermined Hitler’s message of Aryan superiority. With his four gold medals, Jesse Owens was the star of the Berlin Olympics, breaking the world record in the 200-meter race and in the long jump.
