October 2017: 100 years since the death of Mata Hari
October 2017 marks 100 years since the death of Mata Hari (Dutch dancer and alleged spy; 7 August 1876 – 15 October 1917):
Before World War I, Mata Hari was one of Paris' most popular exotic dancers. During the war she was accused of being a German double agent by the French government. In 1917, Mata Hari was executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris. Her name has since become synonymous with espionage, although the nature and extent of her espionage activities remain uncertain, and her guilt is widely contested.
