World War I: Aerial warfare
At the outbreak of the First World War, the aeroplane was still a recent invention, but military chiefs soon realised that aircraft could be very effectively used for reconnaissance. As the war progressed, so did improvements to flying machines, but aircraft remained crude and dangerous. Nevertheless, aeroplanes remained an important psychological weapon as the fear of bombing raids spread. We present a selection of images of fighter planes, reconnaissance planes and the iconic Zeppelin, with many more images available on the akg-images website.
