Months of the Year: February
Our
series on the twelve months of the year
takes us to February, the year's shortest month with only 28 days in common years and 29 days in leap years.
Did you know that the concept of a leap year was first implemented by Roman general Julius Caesar in his Julian Calendar, which he introduced in 45 BC?
February is also widely regarded as the month of love, with Valentine’s Day falling on the 14th. The holiday's roots can be found in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually in the middle of February.
Not to be forgotten, Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) often falls within the month of February, as is the case this year when the nation shall once again get its frying pans and pancake batters ready for the 28th February!
Enjoy our hand-picked selection of images celebrating the month of February.
