The familiar opening bars of the "Blue Danube" waltz are recognised across the globe, and the charming operetta "Die Fledermaus" is in the repertoire of many of the great opera houses. The composer Johann Strauss II wrote these, along with over five hundred pieces of dance music, from polkas to quadrilles. Strauss, himself the son of a famous composer, is credited with the popularity of the waltz in 19th-century Vienna, and the Austrian capital is still synonymous with the dance.
