German Colonial History
At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the German Empire (1871 - 1918) was one of the European colonial powers, although a little late.

The pictures shown here give an insight into German colonial history, the practice of domination, economic exploitation and the suppression of uprisings up to genocide and other crimes.

As a result of its defeat in the First World War, Germany lost its colonies in 1918; nevertheless, the legacy of the colonial era still poses a challenge that must be met.

The special exhibition "Deutscher Kolonialismus. Fragmente seiner Geschichte und Gegenwart" 2016/17 at the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin was a remarkable step in this direction.
