John Atkinson Grimshaw
Little is known about the painter John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893). At his death he left few papers to document his life, but what did remain were his extraordinary paintings: the dimly-lit streets and docks of Victorian England painted with incredible detail and dramatic results. Grimshaw was a master of light and dark, and we present a selection of atmospheric favourites from the archive.
