John Huston's 1961 movie "The Misfits" is perhaps best remembered for what was happening behind the camera than the film itself. The movie was the cinematic swansong of both Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe, and Monroe's marriage to Arthur Miller - who wrote the screenplay - came to an end during filming.
Monroe plays a woman who, having travelled to Reno to divorce her husband, is attracted to Clark Gable's older cowboy. Montgomery Clift and Eli Wallach join Monroe and Gable as they journey into the desert to corral mustangs, where, in the Nevada heat, relationships begin to fray.
Inspired by the movie, which has been shown on
extended run at the BFI Southbank
as part of their Marilyn Monroe season, we present this selection of images that reminded us of Huston's vision of an early 1960s Nevada.
