Abraham Pisarek

akg-images now represents the private photographic archive of Abraham Pisarek (1901-1983), a wholly unique and moving record of Jewish life in the early 20th Century. Born in Poland in 1901, Pisarek emigrated to Germany in 1919 and trained as a press photographer until the Nazi government blacklisted all Jews from employment in 1933. Although all cameras were confiscated from German Jews on 19 June 1942, Pisarek still managed to continue to record Jewish life in Berlin, and his post-war photographs chronicle the rebuilding of a culture and society the Nazis tried - but ultimately failed - to destroy. akg-images is proud to represent the work of Abraham Pisarek for editorial use.

The picture of Pisarek above (akg1-P685-B1925) shows the photographer as a pioneer in Palestine in 1925, where he remained until 1927. All photographs on this page are © Bildarchiv Pisarek / akg-images
