Will
the 2010s be the decade of Johan Zoffany?
Since his death 200 years ago, Zoffany's name has faded somewhat
in comparison to his contemporaries Reynolds and Gainsborough,
but in his heyday he was very much in demand as a portrait artist
and was a painter at the court of George III.
The Royal Academy and Yale are planning a large retrospective
for 2012 and a new
monograph by Penny Treadwell (with a few akg images in it,
of course!) has just been published - the first
work on the artist for ninety years and a comprehensive look
at the man and his paintings.
We present a selection of images by the painter and also illustrations
of his era and his contemporaries. It's time to get to know
this important artist once more...
