Born in Salzburg with an American passport, Marion Kalter grew up in the Berry region of France before settling in Paris. Having studied art history in Italy and the USA and photography in Arles, she became a professional photographer over twenty-five years ago. A musical upbringing was the key to her decision to concentrate on music and the arts and she has since followed some of the greatest musicians, conductors, composers and singers of her time. Her oeuvre encompasses innumerable images from opera productions, concerts, conservatory courses, masterclasses and rehearsals - these include the Salzburg Festival, the work of George Solti and the Viennese Philharmonic and Dorothy Delay's courses at the Julliard School. Kalter's work also features a large collection of portraits of writers, composers, musicians, philosophers, artists and pedagogues: Aaron Copland, Germaine Tailleferre, Henri Sauguet, Cioran, Roland Barthes, Anais Nin and Sonia Delaunay are among those who have posed for her. In recent years Kalter has undertaken a new phase of work with an old Polaroid SX70 to compose images which mix abstraction and still-life. Her photographs appear regularly in the French and international press and she also carries out work for record companies. |
