Peter Connolly (1935-2012) was a renowned scholar of the ancient world and a recognised authority on Greek and Roman military equipment. He was also a highly respected artist who used his expertise and the latest archaeological evidence to reconstruct scenes of everyday life and historical events from the classical world. He also illustrated many classical myths and legends. Peter studied art at Brighton College of Arts and Crafts and produced his first book, The Roman Army, in 1975. He became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1984 and a year later was awarded an honorary research fellowship at the Institute of Archaeology, University College, London. He was both author and illustrator of The Greek Armies; The Roman Army; The Ancient City; Greek Legends; the OUP Ancient World Series which includes The Ancient Greece of Odysseus and The Holy Land and the OUP Roman World Series which includes The Cavalryman, The Legionary, The Roman Fort and Pompeii. He also provided many of the illustrations for the OUP title First Ancient History. akg-images is delighted to be able to offer many of Peter Connolly's stunning images for editorial use. akg colleague Ute Krebs wrote about Peter on our blog in a post from May 2012 which can be read here.
