The akg-images Archive

akg-images ('Archiv für Kunst und Geschichte' - Art and History Archive) was founded in Leipzig, Germany, in November 1945 as a press photography agency by the journalist and art collector Wilfried Göpel. The akg head office is now based on the western outskirts of Berlin (photograph right). A London office (photograph below) was opened in 1994 and in 1995 akg Photothèque was opened in Paris.

The archive now comprises over 10 million images and continues to grow every day. akg has acquired many archive collections through the years and now also represents a number of leading contemporary photographers. The library covers a vast array of subject areas - these include fine art, ancient and modern history, social history, politics, religion, archaeology, architecture, literature, music, medicine, ethnology and entertainment. Our gallery section offers you an insight into just some of these areas.

akg-images Services

akg-images supplies commercial and professional clients with images for reproduction. These clients come primarily from the fields of book, newspaper and magazine publishing, television, advertising and marketing. Over 250,000 images are available online twenty-four hours a day to clients via our simple-to-use searchable website, with more material being added daily.

Alternatively, our friendly and knowledgeable team of researchers has full access to the 10 million images held in our Berlin head office and can provide selections of images to suit your project or brief. Images can be supplied as low-resolution or high-resolution digital scans, sent via email, ISDN or CD, or as lightboxes for clients with website accounts, as well as transparencies and black and white prints, where available. We provide extensive, highly detailed caption information for every picture and these captions are available in English, French or German.

Unfortunately, akg-images is unable to supply images to private individuals or for personal use.
